Fitting Instructions
Fits in about 3 minutes using 6 zip-ties (supplied), see our fitting instructions.
CombOver (2 zip-ties)
- Separate the CombOver halves and remove the connecting pieces.
- Position one half against the frame, reaching the front of where the frame meets the fork crown. The curved part of the spine faces forward, so each side bows upward (like an "n", not a "u") with the slats roughly horizontal.
- Loop a zip-tie loosely around the CombOver. Avoid trapping any cables.
- Slide the second half through the zip-tie on the other side. Check both halves sit flush with slats horizontal, then snug it up.
- Loop the second zip-tie around both halves nearer the front. Tighten both zip-ties and trim the excess.
Toupee (4 zip-ties)
- Curve the Toupee over the tyre and under the fork brace. The 6 holes on each side should straddle each fork lower.
- Insert a zip-tie through a suitable pair of holes and loosely loop around the fork leg, without trapping any brake hoses.
- Adjust the top of the Toupee fore or aft until the front edge is just above the tyre. Note the pair of holes nearest the fork brace on each side.
- Loop a zip-tie on each side through the holes and around the brace.
- When the side zip-ties are tightened, they will pull the sideburns around the fork legs, forming a C shaped shield around the stanchions (as viewed from above). During tightening, adjust each side fore/aft so plenty of the Sideburns cover the stanchion sides NOT protected by the brace (usually the rear side).
- With the zip-ties holding the Toupee in position, ensure that it is close to, but not rubbing the wheel. Once happy, snug them up and trim the excess.
FAQs
Will it keep me completely clean?
No! The Full Facial is born of a philosophy that only the face truly needs to be protected: keeping mud out of your eyes and mouth. In practice you'll be clean from your chest upwards. They cover yer face - we never said anything about yer legs ;-).
Do I need anything else?
No. The set is the complete system: the CombOver and Toupee block different mud trajectories, each block ~50% on their own, together ~95% (there's a bit of overlap). See how they work for more details.
Why two small mudguards instead of one big one?
Because the mud takes two separate paths to your face, and they're best blocked from two different places - each close to your bike, where a small shield does the job. A single guard big enough to do both jobs is a compromise - they end-up heavier and stick-out more. See How They Work for more details.
Will it fit my bike?
Any MTB with disc brakes: any wheel size, frame size, suspension or rigid fork, tyres up to 3".E-MTBs: the Toupee fits fine; on some e-bikes a zip-tie could obstruct battery removal or a tapered down tube may not suit the CombOver - see the FAQ page for details.
