Fitting Instructions
Fits in a couple of minutes using 4 zip-ties (supplied).
Choose internal (between the fork legs, under the crown) or external (wraps around outside the legs, above the crown) fit. Most forks have better fit inside (fewer obstacles such as brake hoses), but it will reduce tyre clearance by a couple of mm.
Internal mounting
- There are 4 pairs of holes on the tongue and 4 outer pairs symmetrically placed that will form a strip to mount inside the fork legs. Lay the Toupee Gravel down with the Fringe pointing forwards and with the tongue attached to the right side.
- Insert a zip-tie into the forward hole of the pair 2nd from the left, loop through the rightmost tongue pair, and back up through the rear hole of the original pair.
- Loop 3 more zip-ties through the other pairs from above.
- Place under the fork crown and between the fork legs, the Fringe in front of the forks above the front wheel. Loop the zip ties around the legs (without trapping any brake hoses) and tighten just enough to hold them in position.
- Adjust the position so the mounting strip is flush against the inside of the fork legs. For wider forks, another pair of holes in the tongue may fit better.
- Moving the bottom of each side forwards or backwards against the fork leg will raise or lower the Fringe relative to the tyre.
- Check the Toupee Gravel is close to, but not rubbing, the tyre and the wheel spins free. Once happy, snug up and trim the excess.
External mounting
- There are 4 pairs of holes symmetrically placed that form 2 strips to mount flush to the outside of the fork legs. The tongue and its 8 holes are NOT used for this mounting option - ignore them for now, they will be removed at the end.
- Lay the Toupee Gravel upside down (instructions visible) and loop 4 zip-ties through the hole pairs.
- Place above and around the fork legs, the Fringe in front of the forks above the front wheel. Loop the zip ties around the legs (without trapping any brake hoses) and tighten just enough to hold them in position.
- Moving the bottom of each side forwards or backwards against the fork leg will raise or lower the Fringe relative to the tyre.
- Check the Toupee Gravel is close to, but not rubbing, the tyre and the wheel spins free. Once happy, snug up the zip-ties, trim the excess and trim the tongue to match the other side.
FAQs
Will it cause toe overlap?
No - it sits at the crown, well above and clear of the arc your toes sweep. And because the CombOver covers the rearward mud from the frame, nothing needs to hang low enough to catch your toes.
Do I need a CombOver as well?
Yes. Mud reaches your face two ways: flung up directly off the back of the wheel; and indirectly thrown up and forwards, then blown back at you. The Toupee Gravel closes the indirect path; the CombOver blocks the direct one. On rigid gravel, a CombOver alone keeps you clean up to about 17mph; the pair keep your face clean at any speed you'll ride. The Full Facial Gravel set gets you both for less. See How They Work for more details.
Toupee or Toupee Gravel?
Simple:
- Rigid gravel - Toupee Gravel.
- MTB (suspension or rigid) - Toupee.
- Gravel suspension fork - They're built much like short-travel MTB forks, so the standard Toupee _should_ be the right pick, though we've yet to test on one.
Will it fit my fork?
Any rigid gravel fork with disc brakes. The inside-or-outside mounting adapts to different fork dimensions and crown clearances - whichever gives your fork the best fit.
Suspension gravel fork? See "Toupee or Toupee Gravel?" above - you probably want the standard Toupee.
Will it flap about or rub the tyre?
No. It's lightweight, compact and zip-tied solidly to your fork, so the clearance you set when fitting never changes.
What are they made from? Are they recyclable?
Polypropylene (PP, recycling code 5) — recyclable in principle. We've made them as small and light as possible, built to last many years, which we think is the best environmental call.
How long do they last?
PP resists moisture, mud and UV — expect many years of use.
