A bit extra up top...

Mud still flies. But your face stays clean.

Your front wheel throws mud up and forwards over itself, and then it blows straight back into your face. Toupee mounts on your fork brace, blocking that spray before it gains enough height to reach your face. The extended Fringe protects you on faster and bumpier trails. And with our own little twist: Sideburns to keep your stanchions clean too!

Super effective. Any mud type. No frame interference. Fit and forget. Light (20g). Silent. Discreet enough to leave on permanently - and on UK trails, you'll be glad you did.

Fits almost any MTB fork from rigid to 170mm travel, even reverse-arch models.  Any wheel or frame size, up to 3" tyres. Easy to transport and store your bike - it stays out of the way. Zip-ties included.

Riding rigid gravel? You want the Toupee Gravel instead. For full coverage, pair with a frame-mounted CombOver. Starting from a bare bike? The Full Facial set gets you both for less.

Fitting Instructions

Fits in a couple of minutes using 4 zip-ties (supplied).

  1. Curve the Toupee over the tyre and under the fork brace. The 6 holes on each side should straddle each fork lower.
  2. Insert a zip-tie through a suitable pair of holes and loosely loop around the fork leg, without trapping any brake hoses.
  3. Adjust the top of the Toupee fore or aft until the front edge is just above the tyre.  Note the pair of holes nearest the fork brace on each side.
  4. Loop a zip-tie on each side through the holes and around the brace.
  5. When the side zip-ties are tightened, they will pull the Sideburns around the fork legs, forming a C shaped shield around the stanchions (as viewed from above). During tightening, adjust each side fore/aft so plenty of the Sideburn covers the part NOT protected by the brace (usually the rear side).
  6. With the zip-ties holding the Toupee in position, ensure that it is close to, but not rubbing the wheel. Once happy, snug them up and trim the excess.
FAQs
They sit a lot further forward than other shorties - won't mud go behind them?

Indeed, and yes. Toupees are designed to complement CombOvers mounted on the bicycle frame. CombOvers will handle mud travelling behind the Toupee. Toupees instead concentrate on shielding your face from mud flung forwards from the top of the wheel - the faster and bumpier you go, the further forward they need to extend to achieve this. See how they work for more details.

Do they protect the fork stanchions?

Yes. The wheel sprays your stanchions and wiper seals mostly from behind - mud leaves the top of the tyre on a rough tangent. The Sideburns curl right around each fork leg into a C-shaped shield (viewed from above), protecting the stanchions from the angle that mud actually arrives.

Do I need a CombOver as well?

Yes. Mud reaches your face two ways: flung up directly off the back of the wheel; and indirectly thrown up and forwards, then blown back at you. The Toupee closes the indirect path; the CombOver blocks the direct one. Each block ~50% on their own, together ~95% (there's a bit of overlap). The Full Facial set gets you both for less.

Toupee or Toupee Gravel?

Simple:

  • MTB (suspension or rigid) - Toupee.
  • Rigid gravel - Toupee Gravel.
  • Gravel suspension fork - They're built much like short-travel MTB forks, so the standard Toupee _should_ be the right pick, though we've yet to test on one.
Will it fit my fork?

Toupee will fit any 'upright' suspension MTB fork, i.e. the upper part slides INSIDE the lowers, with a brace over the wheel between the lowers.  Upside-down forks lack a brace for the Toupee to mount onto.

Reverse-arch forks require the Toupee to be mounted back-to-front to align the holes with the brace (Toupees are otherwise symmetrical fore-aft).

Rigid MTB forks may also require the Toupee to be mounted backwards.

Forks with more than 170mm travel (usually dual-crown) fit too, with one caveat: at top-out the Toupee only blocks part of the gap between the fork legs.

Disc brakes only.

What are they made from? Are they recyclable?

Polypropylene (PP, recycling code 5): recyclable in principle. Small, light and built to last years - which we think is the best environmental call.

How long do they last?

PP resists moisture, mud and UV — expect many years of use.
